PROJECT DESCRIPTION
According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the shipping industry emits approximately 940 million tons of CO2 per year, which in total accounts for about 2.5% of the world's total CO2 emissions. Nowadays, "Cold Ironing" refers to the process of supplying electricity to ships that are anchored in the port while their main and auxiliary engines are turned off.
The main objective of the CIRASIM project is to provide a better insight into the opportunities and challenges for the implementation of Cold Ironing through the analysis of the specifics of each partner port participating in the project – Ploče, Ancona, Durrës, Volos and Belgrade, where each port is defined by a specific set of factors. One of the most prominent port factors is defined by the type(s) of vessels calling/visiting the port(s), i.e. bulk carriers, container ships, ro-ro ships, cruise ships, passenger ships, etc. The second most important factor is defined by port infrastructure elements such as space and/or electricity grid constraints required for safe deployment(s) and the overall ability to provide related services based on electricity produced from various 'green' sources.
PROJECT GOALS
The goal of the CIRASIM project is to analyze selected ports with different specializations set during their cooperation in order to define individual/common challenges and opportunities and define possible ways to solve them. Ultimately, an online tool based on the reports of partner ports will be realized to help them define the benefits of implementing Cold Ironing in terms of reducing CO2 and achieving zero CO2.
